The Come-out Roll The come-out roll is the start of a new session craps betting. The black "puck" is flipped over to say OFF when the next roll is the come-out roll. Whenever you have a new shooter (dice roller), you start with a new come-out roll. You also have a new come-out roll after a point has been scored. If the come-out roll is a 7 or 11, pass line bets win. If the come out roll is a 2, 3 or 12, then the shooter has hit a "craps" and all pass line bets lose, and the shooter makes another come-out roll. If the come-out roll is any other number, the "point" is established for that number, and the black puck moves to that spot on the craps table.
The Pass Line Bet This is by far the most popular bet when you play craps. To make a pass line wager, simply place your bet on the pass line before the shooter makes his next roll. As mentioned above, a 7 or 11 wins 1:1 odds on the come-out roll with a pass line bet, and a 2, 3 or 12 loses. If the shooter rolls any other number, then the "point" is established. Both the shooter and every other pass line bettor then want the shooter to roll the point again before a seven is rolled. If the shooter rolls the point again, you win!
If you don't know what you're doing yet at the craps table, just bet the pass line while you learn, and you can't go wrong. The pass line bet has some of the best odds in the house, similar to video poker odds.
Placing Odds Placing odds on your pass line bet is the best bet on the craps table, and very recommended. Once the point has been established, you can place "odds" behind your pass line bet. Always bet maximum odds on your pass line bets! The casino has NO ADVANTAGE on your odds bet. To make an odds bet, simply place chips directly behind your original wager on the other side of the pass line. (See the 3 in the graphic above.) If the shooter hits the point, you win on both your pass line bet and your odds bet.
The Don't Pass Bar Don't Pass bettors are basically betting that the shooter will roll a seven before the point is rolled. Don't pass bettors are often secretly or publicly hated at a craps table, so the Hog doesn't recommend this bet. There's nothing more fun than a craps table where everyone at the table is winning, slapping high-fives, buying each other drinks, etc. You can never take part in this excitement by betting against the shooter.
Big 6 and Big 8 The big 6 and big 8 bets pay you even money, which essentially gives you HORRIBLE odds. This is a sucker bet that should be avoided at all costs when you play craps. If you want to be on the 6 or 8, then make a place bet on the 6 or 8 (essentially the same bet), where you will be paid 7/6 instead of even money. See #9 below to learn about the place bet.
The Field Bet This is a common and popular bet, with odds that are less than favorable. To make a field bet, place your chip(s) in the area marked "The Field". If the next roll is a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12, you win. Otherwise you lose. The 2 and the 12 usually pay double, while the rest pay even money. This can be an easy and fun bet, but your odds aren't quite as good as the pass line bet.
The Come Bet This is probably the most confusing bet for beginners. The come bet is basically the same as another pass line bet, but it can be made after a point has already been established. Then the shooter has basically established another point for you. You can then place odds on your come bet, just like the pass line bet. Come bets are great with a hot shooter when you play craps, but beware because one roll of a seven will wipe out your pass line bet and all of your come bets at once.
Don't Come Bar The don't come bet is to the come bet as the don't pass bet is to the pass line bet. Make sense? If not, read that sentence again, then read The Don't Pass Bet above. Don't make this bet, unless you like to be hated.
The Place Bet You can make a place bet on any one of the point numbers whenever you want. If your number comes up before a seven, then you win. Otherwise you lose the bet. These bets offer decent odds and pay out different amounts depending on what number you're betting on. This is a popular bet, and recommended if you're getting bored with pass line and come bets, as they give you your next best odds.
Proposition Bets These are perhaps the biggest of the sucker bets (conveniently located at the center of the table), and they should be avoided at all costs! Or at least, don't make a habit of betting propositions. Why? Consider this example. As you can see above, a proposition bet on a 12 (6 and 6) pays 31 to 1. But the odds of rolling a 12 are precisely 36 to 1. There are enough bets on the craps table that offer much better odds, so stick with those.
Because these bets are such sucker bets, the Hog isn't even going to take the time to explain them all. If you don't know what the bet is, then chances are you won't make it!
